This handwoven 100% cotton Turkish hammam towel is inspired by the traditional Makaslı Keşan textiles of Turkey's Eastern Black Sea region. Lightweight, absorbent and versatile, it can be used as a peshtemal, hammam towel, beach sarong, sauna wrap or spa towel.

But what makes this piece truly special is the story woven into it.

The striped pattern is known as “Makaslı Keşan,” named after the distinctive scissor-like shapes created within its traditional woven design.

Keşan textiles have long been part of everyday life in Turkey's Eastern Black Sea region, used in different ways as practical and decorative wraps, traditional clothing and textiles.

I came across this design while searching for something genuinely different, and finding it felt like discovering a hidden treasure.

The bold reds, warm stripes and hand-knotted fringe immediately stood apart from ordinary mass-produced textiles.

TRADITIONALLY HANDWOVEN

I have this fabric woven by a skilled local weaver using a traditional wooden hand loom, preserving the character and beautiful irregularities of traditional weaving.

After the weaving is complete, I hand-knot every fringe myself, one knot at a time, giving each piece its final handmade touch before it reaches you.

I wanted to give this traditional textile a new life as a Turkish hammam towel, peshtemal and beach pareo, while keeping the distinctive pattern and traditional weaving character that make it special.

Its lightweight construction makes it easy to fold into a beach or travel bag, while the generous size allows it to be comfortably wrapped around the body.

As each piece is handwoven, slight variations in dimensions are a natural part of the handmade process.

The handwoven cotton fabric becomes softer and develops even more character with regular washing and use.

The fringe along the edges is hand-knotted by me, one knot at a time.
